Romance is in the air as a couple in love dances by the lake, in the gentle light of twilight. The harmonious strains of violin music are the backdrop to this dance of romance, and festive lights shining from the tree branches add to the sense of mystery and intrigue.

As with all good representational paintings, Twilight Romance tells a story – but the details of that story are open to the imagination of the viewer. Who is the violinist, we wonder, and does the couple even know that he is there?

Is the rowboat something in which they have just arrived – on their way to a party, perhaps – and upon stepping out they enter into their dance of romance? Or are they on their way from a celebration or fete, and heading to the rowboat they stop for one last, long, meaningful time together before one or both or them get into the boat? The questions are as endless as the answers.

Every time we look at Twilight Romance, we add to, embellish, change, adapt, or deepen the story, but regardless of where we go with this story, the beauty of romance, and love, and being together with just the right person, remains.

Twilight Romance celebrates the beauty of love, capturing that perfect moment on the perfect day when the couple has eyes only for each other. The violinist, as well, enters into the moment, playing his music with a sensitivity and skill enhanced by the emotion in the air.

The viewer feels the slight coolness of the evening as the breeze rises from the lake, but though the lace shawl lies readily draped at the edge of the boat, ready to be placed on the shoulders, this is not the time to stop the dance and reach for it. The warmth of love is mantle enough.
